A late moth flight drove one North Carolina cotton grower to seek a variety that does more to keep away unwanted pests — whether it’s insects or just sleepless nights.
“It spooked me pretty good,” says Chris Braddy of the 2013 event.
Braddy chose PhytoGen® brand variety PHY 495 W3RF with WideStrike® 3 Insect Protection.
In PHY 495 W3RF with WideStrike 3 Insect Protection, Braddy planted a variety that contains two Cry proteins and a vegetative insecticidal protein (Vip3A) that provides even more advanced protection against a wide worm spectrum, including cotton bollworm, budworm, armyworm and loopers.
In 2014, heavy rains — 35 inches in an area where 20 inches is normal — stressed crops. But Braddy’s PHY 495W3RF was the best cotton he’s grown. He averaged 1,038 lb./A.
“I’ve never averaged 1,038 pounds on my farm.” Braddy says. “Quality was good. I didn’t lose a single cent. If I had put it in the loan, I probably would’ve gotten a premium.”
