Growers must consider premiums and discounts, as well as yield, when choosing cottonseed

Mid-Atlantic growers seeking the most from their investment must look beyond yield, says Dr. Joel Faircloth, PhytoGen cotton development specialist. Premiums and discounts, plus on-farm and OVT trials results are equally important when choosing varieties.

“PhytoGen brand PHY 333 WRF has been an exceptionally consistent variety, winning OVTs year-in and year-out,” Faircloth says.

Not only does PHY 333 WRF outyield the competition, on-farm trials and OVTs show it also has better fiber quality, Faircloth says.

In the Mid-Atlantic region, PHY 499 WRF and PHY 495 W3RF also produce high yields and remain durable. PHY 495 W3RF includes the Bt gene for enhanced protection from bollworm. For Mid-Atlantic growers battling soil-borne pests, PhytoGen brand variety PHY 487 WRF has two different native genes providing resistance to root knot nematodes.

And for growers planting PHY 499 WRF, Faircloth encourages them to contact their local PhytoGen representatives to learn about PHY 490 W3FE with WideStrike® 3 Insect Protection and the Enlist cotton trait.
